Sixth Form Information Evening
Our Sixth Form Information Evening took place on Monday 28th January. Attendance was very high with students from Wirral Grammar School and many from other schools in the area. If you missed it, copies of the Prospectus can be accessed through our web-site.

The Sixth Form at Wirral Grammar School is, by any measure, very successful. Recent value added data that measures the progress that students make from GCSE to A Level, indicates that our school is one of the most successful nationally. Well over 80% of students secure their first choice of both University and course.

Most pupils at Wirral Grammar School stay on into the Sixth Form and each year we have a significant number who join us from other schools. Good grade achievement at GCSE is the first important step. While 5 GCSE grades at grade C+ is seen as the base starting requirement, the vast majority of students attending Wirral Grammar School have secured at least 6 grade B grades and above in their GCSE courses.

If you are thinking of joining us from another school in the area, moving to a school where you have not been a pupil in Years 7 to 11 can make you feel like an ‘outsider’. For this reason we provide an opportunity for you to visit the school in the summer term so that starting in September does not feel quite so strange. There will be others in the same situation!

Our web site contains a specific section about our Sixth Form and you can also download our
Prospectus for 2008/9

At Wirral Grammar School students select three A level subjects and they study these at both AS (Year12) and A2 courses (Year 13). Together, AS and A2, lead to a full A Level qualification. All students also take General Studies A Level.

Some schools provide four AS courses in Year 12, allowing students to drop one of them in Year 13 to focus upon three. Experience shows us that students perform better when they focus on three courses from the start. Teaching three courses instead of four also allows us to provide teacher-supervised private study time which we feel has a significant impact on students’ focus and performance.

Many of our students do choose to take extra qualifications as part of an extension programme. Some take extra AS courses, attending lessons between their main timetabled lessons or on an independent study basis. Students can also take first year level under-graduate university courses alongside their AS and A2 combinations
