Both staff and pupils at our school work hard to ensure that safety in terms of bullying is at a maximum level at all times.
The school's anti-bullying policy, which is available in a pupil-friendly leaflet, for example, aims to ensure that all those connected with the school understand that bullying behaviour (including that of a racist or sexist nature) will not be tolerated under any circumstances. It aims to promote a school ethos where bullying is regarded as unacceptable by everyone.
In the last 18 months the students themselves have established an Anti-Bullying Committee, which is made up of two to three students from each year group, representing the school with regards to Anti-Bullying issues. The committee meets once or twice every term to discus upcoming events and schemes within the school in relation to Anti-Bullying.
To complement this there is a Peer Support Group (PSG) in school, made up of a group of students ranging from years 10 to 13, who are in turn assigned to a form in the lower school. The PSG regularly hold individual drop-in sessions in the Learning Mentors office, which ANYBODY can attend, from ANY year group. This INCLUDES the sixth form.
Supporting these issues from a staff point of view is our Learning Mentor, Ms Walker, who has an office close to the Sixth Form study area. Ms Walker hosts voluntary drop-in sessions where pupils can discuss any issues they have.
It must also be remembered that pupils are encouraged to use whichever method of communication they feel most comfortable with to let us know about bullying and other issues, and they can talk to ANY member of staff that they feel they can confide in, as well as members of the Anti-Bullying committee and Peer Support Group.
