On Friday 22nd February, 19 Year 8 students left Wirral Grammar School heading for Barry School near Cardiff. The journey took around 5 hours and after a welcoming lunch we played a 50 minute game against Barry School.
We started the match brilliantly, with Frank Richards coasting over for an easy first try. Wirral dominated the game with some excellent play from both forwards and backs, eventually running out 46-0 winners, with further tries coming at regular intervals from Frank Richards (3), Danny Adkins (2), Simon Flavell, Adam Lewin and Luke Harris. AlexGriffiths converted 4 and Chris Cowley 1. Following an excellent performance at Full Back, Adam Lewin was named Man of the Match.
We spent the night with our Cowbridge hosts and in the morning we came up against a very strong Cowbridge side in a game that could have gone either way. After conceding the first try, Wirral fought bravely and crossed the line through Frank Richards, but Cowbridge snatched the lead late in the second half and despite Wirral playing some excellent rugby, Cowbridge held on to win 12-7.
That afternoon, the whole party descended on the Millennium Stadium to watch the Six Nations game between Wales and Italy. We were all honorary Welshmen for the afternoon and savoured the magnificent atmosphere in one of the world's greatest stadiums. It was a fantastic experience for all the party, only surpassed by watching England beat France on TV at Cowbridge Rugby Club that evening!
Thanks to Mr.McKibben and Mr.McKinney for their time and effort in organising the trip and providing us with such a fantastic opportunity.
