The specification has been designed with a systems approach in mind. The approach is to treat the subject practically and as far as possible on a systems basis. Candidates are expected to use their abilities in defining and solving a problem, in selecting the best realisation of a particular system from possible alternatives and in understanding how the component parts of a system interact to make the whole system meet its specification.
The syllabus allows time for a substantial amount of practical work and 'hands-on' experience to promote a better understanding, as well as a broader appreciation of potential applications. Two pieces of computer software are used extensively during the course, "crocodile clips", which allow systems to be simulated and "absorb electronics".
By the end of the course, candidates will have developed an increased awareness of the social and economic aspects of electronics, and of its impact on today's multi-cultural society.
