What is Pastoral Care?
A central principle underlying the pastoral system is that our boys are most likely to be successful academically if they feel secure within their school environment. To this end, Wirral Grammar School for Boys gives great weight to the importance of effective induction and on-going guidance for each student in our care.
At WGS pastoral care is a particular strength. Our teachers and support staff are friendly, approachable and spend time getting to know the pupils in their care.
All our boys belong to one of 5 houses: Barber, Dodds, Hodgson, Lever & Wilson. In their House students will participate in sporting activities etc helping to develop a sense of team spirit and make new friends. All boys have a Form Tutor who performs the main pastoral role, ensuring that they are happy and settled in the early stages, and encouraging them to develop good work habits and become increasingly more involved in school life . Students can also receive support from Heads of Year, individual subject teachers, a school learning mentor, prefects and peer-mentors
As boys move into the Sixth Form, they learn to take more responsibility for their own actions, however they remain in the pastoral care of a tutor supported by a Head of Sixth Form and 2 assistants.
