Psychology (KS5):
There is a heavy biological and statistical component to this course, which is more academically demanding than other specifications. This one has been chosen, as it is the best preparation for higher education courses in the subject which demand a greater degree of scientific discipline than ever before.
During the AS (lower sixth) course, students have the opportunity to learn about different approaches in the subject, from its roots in medicine and philosophy, through animal behaviourism and Freudian psychoanalysis, to contemporary research in the cognitive and bio-functional domains. The second part of the course focuses on Social and Developmental psychology, with a further visit to cognitive science.
During the A2 (upper sixth) course, students have the opportunity to learn within the area of Child Development and Sports Psychology, with a further opportunity to extend their analytical and evaluative skills in terms of current debates in Psychology. Students are also trained in conducting a formal science practical for both the AS and A2 sessions, which follow the same stringent criteria set by the British Psychological Society.
