Admissions for 2010 / 2011

Boys also join our school the main school in Years 7 to 11. This can be for a mixture of reasons and include: where parents are re-locating and require a change of school for their son or where parents have concerns with private sector provision (8 pupils have joined our school from the private sector in the last twelve months). In such instances, the testing arrangements are managed by our school. As a Foundation School, the Governing Body acts as an admissions authority in its own right. You can read the latest version of the schools Admissions Policy by following the link on the home page.

If you are enquiring about your son joining our Sixth Form, you should contact Mr Mike Askew (Deputy Head: Sixth Form). For joining the school in Years 7 to 8, you should follow the guidance below.

Where a parent wants their son to move from another school to Wirral Grammar School they should follow these steps:

1. Contact Tanya Fry at Wirral Grammar School. Tanya is the schools Admissions Manager (0151 644 0908- Extn 223). She will guide you through the process; arrange visit appointments and look after testing arrangements

2. If your son is a pupil in another Wirral Secondary School there is a need to complete a ‘transfer request form’ which can be obtained from the Local Authority (Education Department). Tanya Fry will advise you about this process

3. We strongly recommend that parents visit the school and go on a tour of the site. It is important that your son is happy with what he sees. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions about how the school functions and collect important literature. We typically arrange for Sixth Form Prefects to take you on a tour so you can find out about what life is like here from a student’s perspective

4. If you like what you see Tanya Fry (Admissions Manager) will arrange for your son to be assessed. This will involve arranging a date for him to take the test. The tests are not marked by teachers at the school but through a separate organisation called NFER. While doing a test in an unfamiliar place can increase anxiety, we will do our utmost to put your son at his ease. Orange juice and biscuits are available afterwards!

5. Once we have received your son’s score we will inform you as to whether or not he has reached the standard.

6. Your son would not be offered a place if his result is below the standard or if the school has no additional places in the year group that he would be joining. In either case you have a right to an appeal. Appeals are managed independently from the school

7. If we are able to offer your son a place, we will ensure that he is supported in settling in. We will need to establish what work he has done in his current school; his standards attained; progress marks etc. Your son’s Head of Year would meet with your son regularly in the first few weeks, to ensure that any issues or concerns are quickly overcome.
