Community

Wirral Grammar School for Boys is a school located at the heart of a vibrant and supportive community, and as such we are working hard to develop effective working relationships with partner primary and secondary schools, local employers and members of the local and wider community such as adult learners.

Focusing on Business & Enterprise, we have helped 26 Wirral schools to set up and maintain healthy tuck shops, developed a community website for local businesses and provided ICT related short courses to groups of adult learners.

New projects have included the development of a school community website which is currently being created and maintained by Year 10 students from Wirral Grammar School for Boys and a group of Year 6 pupils from Brackenwood Junior School and the introduction of an after-school Science club for Year 5 pupils.

Finally, at the end of this academic year, we have invited all Year 6 pupils from our four partner primary schools to take part in an event that we have called "Primary Enterprise Day" which, as well as helping to develop the ICT, Maths and Enterprise skills of the pupils involved, should also go some considerable way to easing their transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3.

After School Science Club

Science Club

A new project successfully introduced this year has been the Year 5 after-school science club. Over a period of 30 weeks approximately 90 pupils from Brackenwood Junior School, Higher Bebington Juniors, Stanton Road Primary School and Poulton Lancelyn Primary School have been involved in science classes that have been enterprising, educational but above all great fun!

Each session has been led by Miss Woods and Miss Clements, two of our science teachers, along with volunteers from our student body. The range of activities that the pupils have experienced have as far as possible been in line with the current Key Stage 2 curriculum and have included building spaghetti towers, creating miniature hot air balloons, preparing power point presentations on the solar system and using microscopes to look at head lice! The children have not used any dangerous chemicals or equipment and have been supervised throughout.

Wirral Grammar Boys continues to provide support and information to parents of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils to help to prepare them for the transition to secondary education.

Those children taking part in the after school clubs have already commented how much they like coming into school, meeting the older students and being taught by our staff and they feel comfortable that this care and education will continue throughout their secondary education.
