Curriculum Areas

Our curriculum provides for our pupils in terms of both their abilities and interests. We do not leap onto "trends" in terms of subject choices, but provide a curriculum that evolves in line with experience and a sensitive knowledge of the needs of the pupils.

In years 7 to 9 the National Curriculum is followed. Our timetable currently comprises 50 lessons taught over a two week cycle (A & B). Each lesson is 60 minutes long.

In KS4 (years 10&11) boys are able to choose certain subjects, and are guided through the process in year 9 when parents are invited to attend an Options Information Evening.

Art & Design

Art & Design

Welcome to the Art & Design Department

Our Art & Design courses provide the students with an opportunity to be creative, and make personal responses to subjects, themes and issues, using a wide range of materials and processes.

The staff use a variety of creative approaches in order to engage students as they investigate, experiment, document and realise two and three dimensional work as practitioners and critics.

Above all, Art & Design offers another mode of communication, which enables our students to use their skills and creativity to express ideas and feelings, and to help to understand their own and other cultures.

KS 3 & 4

Art (KS3)
The Following areas are covered by Year Seven pupils as they progress through this key stage: Drawing and Painting, Printmaking, Textiles, Ceramics and Critical Studies in relation to their practical work. The focus for their work is the manipulation of Line, Tone, Form, Colour and Shape.

Art (KS4)
This 2 year course covers a wide range of Art Appreciation, with emphasis on practical skills to encourage:
a) The skills of composition and visual expression
b) An understanding of a wide range of media including pottery, textiles and computer graphics
c) An appreciation and understanding of the work of Artists and Craft Makers, groups and movements, past and present.

Assessment:
A final grade is reached through a combination of coursework (60%), which provides evidence of attainment, and examination (40%), in which candidates are required to produce a final piece of work over a period of 10 hours.

KS5

Art (KS5) STRUCTURE:
The A Level Art specification (or syllabus) is made up of two sections:
a) Advanced Subsisiary (AS) qualification, which replaces the old Advanced Supplementary
b) A Level (A2) qualification

Candidates will take the AS before they take the A2 to achieve the full A Level. The AS represents 50% of the qualification, with the A2 providing the remaining 50%.

UNITS:
The AS and the A2 will be made up of 3 units each, with candidates taking 6 units to achieve the full A level. Candidates are expected to produce evidence relating to the following:
1. Good observational skills in both drawing & painting, using a range of materials and processes.
2. A written personal study dealing with the exploration of historical and contemporary references involving first-hand investigation through visits to Art Galleries and Museums (see useful links).
3. Controlled practical tests of 5 and 15 hours duration, submitting unaided work produced under supervision within a set time period.
