Curriculum Areas

Our curriculum provides for our pupils in terms of both their abilities and interests. We do not leap onto "trends" in terms of subject choices, but provide a curriculum that evolves in line with experience and a sensitive knowledge of the needs of the pupils.

In years 7 to 9 the National Curriculum is followed. Our timetable currently comprises 50 lessons taught over a two week cycle (A & B). Each lesson is 60 minutes long.

In KS4 (years 10&11) boys are able to choose certain subjects, and are guided through the process in year 9 when parents are invited to attend an Options Information Evening.

Business Studies

Business Studies

Welcome to the Business Studies Department - The Business and Enterprise aspect of our curriculum is enjoying a period of rapid growth and development, and is currently at the centre of the progress being made by Wirral Grammar School for Boys .

Expertise in this area, coupled with continuing investment in personnel, accommodation, resources and curriculum development, places us at the forefront of all of the new and exciting innovations taking place at the school.

The Business Studies Department aims to provide, through a variety of teaching and learning strategies, knowledge and understanding of the business world.

This includes the different departments found within business, types of ownership and the different kinds of external pressures facing businesses today. Business Studies students here at WGS, will gain a first class understanding of businesses and the world in which they operate.

KS4

Business Studies (KS4)

The aim of this course is to develop a knowledge and understanding of the way in which businesses operate, and of the wider environment in which they exist. Areas covered include: Marketing, Production, Industrial Relations, Accountancy and the Economy.

The course is assessed by final written examination and by coursework. Teaching techniques include the use of simulations, group discussions and role- play. Where possible, specialist outside speakers will be invited into school, to provide their views on a range of Business & Enterprise related topics.

In Year 10, students will be able to apply some of the business concepts and techniques already studied via a mini-enterprise activity. In previous years, industrial visits have been arranged, and will continue to play an important role within the GCSE programme.

The course provides a sound basis for study of this subject, and other related subjects such as Economics, at a higher level.

KS5

Business Studies (KS5)-Examination Board-AQA

The Department has decided to build on the success of recent years and continue its association with the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance.

The course covers 6 key Business Areas: Marketing, Accounting & Finance, People, Operations Management, External Influences and Objectives and Strategy.

The courses offered will provide a smooth transition from GCSE Business Studies, although this is not a pre-requisite for studying AS/A level Business Studies.

How is the course assessed? The A Level qualification is in 2 parts:
Advanced Subsidiary (AS)-50% of the total award
A2 - 50% of the total award.

AS is taken during the lower sixth year, and A2 examinations during upper sixth. The assessment will be based largely on case studies, but unit 5(External Influences) is based on a written report and an essay.
