Curriculum Areas

Our curriculum provides for our pupils in terms of both their abilities and interests. We do not leap onto "trends" in terms of subject choices, but provide a curriculum that evolves in line with experience and a sensitive knowledge of the needs of the pupils.

In years 7 to 9 the National Curriculum is followed. Our timetable currently comprises 50 lessons taught over a two week cycle (A & B). Each lesson is 60 minutes long.

In KS4 (years 10&11) boys are able to choose certain subjects, and are guided through the process in year 9 when parents are invited to attend an Options Information Evening.

Maths Activity Day

Welcome to the Maths Department

The Mathematics Department at WGS is justifiably proud of its achievements. Indeed during our most recent inspection (March 2006) OFSTED commented highly.

Our Department is committed to the aims and ideals of the National Curriculum. It delivers these aims and ideals via its own Schemes of Work. These schemes set out which topics will be delivered to each class, and through which medium.

KS3

The course is based on all 4 Attainment Targets of the National Curriculum. Initially the course consolidates work covered in year 6. Pupils are taught throughout year 7 in their form groups, and setting only begins after the school examinations in the Summer Term of year 7. Setting is achieved by considering results from the module tests taken throughout the year, from classwork and from the Summer examination.

Throughout the year, pupils will attempt designated tasks to help them improve their skills in the area of 'Using and Applying'. The end of year assessment is based upon 2 written examinations, and the continually assessed work done during the year. The whole of Key Stage 3 now follows the STP Mathemetics National Curriculum course, which provides an excellent foundation for their studies at GCSE level.

KS4

The course we will be following is the Edexcel linear Specification A.

Sets 5 & 6 will study the Intermediate Tier Specification and Sets 1, 2, 3 and 4 will study the Higher Tier.

Grades E to B are available at Intermediate Tier, and grades C to A* at the Higher Tier.

Sets 2 to 6 will follow the schedule outlined below:
- May of Year 10 - Ma1 Task
- Oct of Year 11 - Ma4 Data Handling project
- June of Year 11 - Terminal Exams

Set 1 will complete their GCSE studies by the end of year 10. In year 11, they will study the MEI Foundations of Advanced Mathematics and Pure Mathematics P1 Module.

KS5

Aims: 1) To consolidate and extend previous mathematical experiences at GCSE or Additional level.
2) To provide applications of Maths in a wide variety of contexts.

In order to pursue the above aims, the Maths Department provides several types of courses designed for the different needs of our students.
The scheme followed is the London (EDEXCEL) Modular Mathematics A Level : (http://www.edexcel.org.uk/qualifications/)

Each Module studied is examined separately, and awards at AS and A- level are determined by a total points score.

The A Level Maths options are explained in more detail on page 20 of our Sixth Form Prospectus
