Curriculum Areas

Our curriculum provides for our pupils in terms of both their abilities and interests. We do not leap onto "trends" in terms of subject choices, but provide a curriculum that evolves in line with experience and a sensitive knowledge of the needs of the pupils.

In years 7 to 9 the National Curriculum is followed. Our timetable currently comprises 50 lessons taught over a two week cycle (A & B). Each lesson is 60 minutes long.

In KS4 (years 10&11) boys are able to choose certain subjects, and are guided through the process in year 9 when parents are invited to attend an Options Information Evening.

Media Studies

We follow the AQA Media Studies GCSE syllabus, using the Drama Studio, suitably adapted, as our base. The course is taught by Mr Davies, Mrs Kahn and Mrs Campbell of the English department.

It is recognised that the mass media play an increasingly important role in our lives, providing us with entertainment, information and social values. Students spend more time in a year watching TV and listening to the radio than they do in school!

A critical understanding of the media is, therefore, an important skill for any student to acquire.

The main areas we will cover are Radio, the Press, Popular Music, Television and Film. We would particularly welcome students who have, or would like to acquire, skills in sound recording or desk-top publishing.

The examination at the end of year 11 is a written test lasting for 3 hours over 2 sessions. Recent subjects have included Comedy Films, the promotion of popular music, television documentaries and the tabloid press.
