Wirral Grammar School for Boys & Wirral Grammar School for Girls
CHARITY BALLOON RACE-Thursday 2nd April 2009

On the morning of Thursday 2nd April, a team of very keen and enthusiastic sixth formers gathered in the girls' school PE department to begin what was to prove an eventful morning all in the name of charity - 400 balloons (and 20 sixth formers) to fill with helium, 400 tickets to attach and 400 pieces of string to be knotted - could it be done in time? Just about! After 3 hours we were all ready to go, but then we came to realise something - how were we going to get all of the balloons outside?! After another hour involving some ingenious (even if we do say so ourselves) masterminding, we were on the Tennis Courts all ready to release...

So, at 1pm, approximately 400 red and white balloons were let loose into the skies of Bebington in aid of the 'Cystic Fibrosis Trust' and 'Save the Children'. We were lucky enough to have a dry but quite windy day, and whilst a handful of balloons only made it as far as the music rooms, the majority set out destined for further afield. At the time of writing, our furthest recognition so far has come from Roanhead in Cumbria! If, by any chance, you have stumbled across our school website because you've found a balloon, please send a quick e-mail to balloons@wirralgrammarboys.com with your name & contact details - there is a prize available for the person who reports the furthest travelled balloon.

An enjoyable morning was had by all who helped, and I'd just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those pupils, parents and staff who purchased a balloon in addition to Mr E Riley for his help, support and minibus driving, along with, of course, the sixth formers from both schools who gave up their time.
