Rotary Young Chef Competition 2009

Posted on: 01.12.2009

The Rotary Club of Hoylake & West Kirby organised this years local heat of the Rotary Young Chef Competiton 2009/2010. The competiton is aimed at anyone of school age who enjoys cooking, and involved preparing a healthy 2 course meal for 2 people.

The final of the local heat took place on Saturday 21st November at Wirral Metropolitan College, where the boys were asked to produce their dishes using the professional kitchens which form part of the Hospitality & Catering department.

I am delighted to say that our 3 entrants, Jacob Smailes (Year 7), Russ Jones (Year 8) and James Dennis (Year 10) finished 4th, 3rd and 2nd respectively, and each won a cheque up to the value of £50. The boys were just pipped by a full-time catering student from Wirral Met, and displayed excellent cooking skills throughout the one and a half hours allowed. Their menus were as follows:

Jacob:

Main Course:

Macaroni Bake, topped with Cheshire Cheese and served with salad

Dessert:

Figolli-A Maltese almond pastry dish

Russ:

Main Course:

Cream cheese filled chicken breast wrapped in parma ham and served with potatoes and a medley of seasonal vegetables.

Dessert:

Cheesecake served with warm seasonal berries

James:

Main Course:

Marinated chicken skewer served with a mango & mint salsa.

Dessert:

Raspberry filled profiteroles served with a raspberry coulis.

The judges were impressed by the skills, knowledge and passion of the boys taking part who, on the day, were a real credit to the school...well done boys!

Mr Boustead (Community Learning Manager).
