School News & FeaturesWirral Languages & ICT Day![]() Posted on: 08.01.2010 On Wednesday 16th December 2009, five year ten pupils accompanied by Miss Dickson attended the Wirral Languages and ICT day at Calday Grange Grammar School. The Wirral Grammar Boys were competing against other teams from Mosslands School, Pensby HS for Girls, Rock Ferry HS, Upton Hall School and Weatherhead HS as well as 2 teams from the hosts, Calday Grange. The focus of the day was to combine language and ICT skills in order to launch a European "X Factor" promotion in a country where the team's language is spoken-in our case French. The main task was to create a brochure promoting the event. This had to include information about the venue, nearby hotels, transport, ticket costs etc. Points were awarded for the quality of the language, presentation, ICT skills, teamwork and creativity. Another task required the group to prepare an interview with a 'star', in our case pop singer, Pierre Henry (an imaginary figure created by ourselves). One of the group had to conduct an imaginary interview with Pierre over the phone (in French of course!). A further task was a "Dragon's Den" type scenario, where the team were subjected to a number of questions regarding the project. Each member of the team had to field questions unprepared, and you really had to be pro-active and think on your feet. The final part of the task was to record a radio interview in French in order to advertise the event. This was recorded in a language lab and points were awarded for the effectiveness of the advert and the quality of language. Prizes were awarded in various categories including 'Best ICT skills', 'Best use of language' etc. The boys from Wirral Grammar were delighted to pick up the award for the 'Best Advert' category. Credit has to go to James McIver and Ben Sanders as well as Jordan Rimmer for an "imaginative jingle"! It was a very useful day, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you to Miss Dickson for her great support and encouragement. Christopher Crowley (10CC) |
