Representative from British Council visits WGSB

Posted on: 18.03.2010

A senior representative from the British Council has visited WGSB after being invited by Wirral South MP, Ben Chapman. The British Council is the UK's leading body for international, cultural and educational exchange. It receives about a third of its overall income from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and its projects connect people in the UK and other countries and encourages them to engage and share ideas and knowledge. One of its main priorities is internationalising education in schools.

Head of UK Relations, Colm McGivern, was given a tour of the school and spoke to the Headteacher, staff and pupils.

Mr Chapman commented: 'I was pleased to be able to welcome Colm McGivern to my constituency and I am grateful to the Headteacher at Wirral Grammar Boys, and for accommodating him. I am delighted that schools in the area are being given the chance to develop their connections with those abroad. The British Council highlights the opportunities to learn from pupils all over the world. I hope this work continues long into the future'.

Colm McGivern said: 'I was immediately impressed with what I have seen at Wirral Grammar School for Boys. It is well connected internationally and participates fully in many of the British Council's programmes. This international and global awareness shows through in the confidence and creativity that's obvious in both the pupils and the teachers. They have much to be proud of-and I'd like to thank Ben Chapman for showing me this beacon of excellence in a beautiful part of the UK.'

Wirral Grammar School for Boys Headteacher, David Hazeldine, added: 'It was a pleasure to welcome Colm McGivern and Ben Chapman MP to our school. Pupils in Year 10 were able to illustrate the wide ranging opportunities for international collaboration. As a Comenius School, and on the back of our International Schools Award, we expect to continue to build new international partnerships for the future'.
