School News & FeaturesWirral Beat Mosslands to Land Wirral Schools Cup!![]() Posted on: 16.07.2010
Year 9 Cricket Wirral Cup Winners! Y9 Wirral GS cricket team batted first. Early runs were scored before skipper Matthew Stewart lobbed one to cover and was out for just one. Then Andrew Heath and Kieran Ivers put together a very sensible partnership that saw Wirral up to 42 off 10 overs. Heath then went for one shot too many and was caught easily in the covers for a good 26. Jack Dixon then came in and started to play some lovely shots all round the wicket as Mosslands bowling started to crumble. Ivers was out for 26 and Wirral looked to be heading for a decent total at 80 for 5. Then with 5 overs to go, Ben Brooks and Dixon put on a partnership that saw Wirral over the 100 mark. Brooks hit 3 4's and Dixon 4. Wirral’s total of 120 for 3 off 0 overs was a good one but some good bowling and fielding was needed to keep Mosslands down. Indeed, the opening pair of Ben Savage and Sam Wicks did just the job. They bowled tightly and the fielding supported the bowlers. Wicks bowled 0-10 off his 4 overs, and Savage very tight indeed including the early wicket of the Mosslands opener. Skipper Matty Stewart entered the arena with some good straight bowling and got rid of the dangerous Beaver for 4, clean bowled. Suddenly Mosslands were behind the asking rate, and with Dixon and Brooks taking wickets, Mosslands hopes were gone. Some fine catches from Dixon (3), Jake Phillips (2) (he kept wicket really well in this match), Andrew Heath (2) and a sensational direct hit and run out from Luke Kieran, Mosslands collapsed from 41 for 4 to 63 for 9. It was left to Chris Byrnes to clean up the last man with a fine boundary catch by Ben Savage. Casey Sawley bowled a good maiden over and overall EVERYONE in the team did their bit in this fine victory. Matt Stewart really did lead the team well and his field positions were spot on (with some help from yours truly!) Well done to the lads, a great win in what has been a very challenging tournament!
