On Monday 14th April, accompanied by their Form Tutors and Geography teachers, all Year 7 pupils took part in a Geography fieldwork visit to Stockley Farm, Arley, near Northwich in Cheshire. The farm is privately owned and forms part of the Arley Hall estate. It is a modern, working dairy farm that gained ‘organic status’ in 2001. During the visit boys were able to see every aspect of the farm operations, including animal rearing, milking and aspects of farm business management. The opportunities for ‘hands on’ animal feeding provided added interest and amusement. As part of their Year 7 Geography course, pupils study examples of primary, secondary and tertiary sector employment and the visit to Stockley provided examples of both primary and tertiary activity. Alongside the main business of farming and milk production, pupils were able to find out how the farm has diversified in recent years and has become a popular tourist attraction in the region.
