HEADTEACHER'S WELCOMESimon Ascroft

Simon Ascroft

Welcome to Wirral Grammar School for Boys where our combination of core values, educational excellence and caring, committed staff provides an enriching environment in which to learn.

Wirral Grammar School for Boys has offered a distinct education on the Cross Lane site since 1931. We welcome boys from across the Wirral and beyond. We get to know all our students and ensure that they are encouraged and challenged to realise their potential; our vibrant student community is the true heart and soul of the school.

At Wirral Grammar School for Boys our aim is for students to discover something new through their learning every day; we create a learning environment in which our students thrive, and most important of all, a place where they feel that they belong.

We believe that school should provide an energising and transformational experience. We set very high standards and encourage all students to have high aspirations.

We are committed in ensuring that Wirral Grammar School for Boys remains community-centred and fully inclusive. We believe that academically minded and talented students, regardless of their backgrounds, should have equal opportunities to benefit from a grammar school education.

Academic excellence, demonstrated by the exceptional results achieved by our students every year is important to us, but this is only part of the education that is on offer. Our broad co-curricular programme offers genuine enrichment inside and beyond the classroom for the students to find what it is that inspires them.

In a fast-moving and competitive world, we believe it is important that our students grow and mature into confident adults, equipped with the qualifications and skills that they will need to make their next, successful steps in life.

We are proud of our students and all that they achieve. Together, both present and past students share a great pride in the school, and we are developing an alumni programme that will benefit the school and the global network of Wirralians.

If you are interested to find out more about our great school and incredible students, please have a look around our website and get in contact with us. We are at an exciting point in the school’s history; do you want to help create our future?

Yours sincerely,

WelcomeWirral Grammar School for Boys exists to provide the best possible education for its pupils.

Each boy is encouraged to maximise his academic potential. A diverse extra-curricular programme provides scope for individual character development. We say that life at WGSB is about both working hard and playing hard.  Our website provides both factual information and support. If you are at the initial stage of choosing a school for your son, you are welcome to come and see us at work. We are always pleased to see parents and prospective pupils and show them the school in action.

Sixth FormStart your Sixth Form Journey with Us

Most year eleven students progress into our sixth form, although a small number do leave us to pursue alternative or vocational courses that are offered in alternative environments. We also welcome a number of external students who wish to join our sixth form, and these come from a wide geographical area, as far afield as Chester and Liverpool. We value each of these students equally and are keen for all to quickly settle into our practices and meet our expectations.

We are developing our outreach programme to enable us to broaden our appeal to students from a larger catchment area and to those attending 11-16 schools who may not have previously considered continuing their education here.

We encourage any student considering applying to WGSB6 to contact WGSB6Admissions@wirralgrammarboys.com to arrange a bespoke tour of our facilities and a chance to meet students and teachers. We hope this personalised approach will provide a valuable and informative opportunity to learn more about our community.

Sport at WGSBPhysical Education and Games

Physical Education and Games play a major role within our school, and extra-curricular sport is an area in which we pride ourselves.  Our ethos is to provide a breadth of excellent sporting opportunities for as many students as possible to help them develop a life-long love of sport, regardless of the level they decide to play.

In school we have opportunities for students to enjoy sport at a social level right through to competitive regional and national competitions where we have seen plenty of success over many years.  Countless students continue to play sport beyond their school years, some at university and many who carry on helping to swell the playing numbers at local clubs.  Occasionally, some students go on to perform at the highest level within their chosen sport thanks in part to their experience here at WGSB.
