We are very proud of the achievements, destinations and personal goals that our sixth formers secure for themselves each year. Our students flourish in a challenging academic environment and progress to enter an ever-more competitive higher education and working market; we feel they do so, well prepared and appreciative of the support the school has given them since they began their WGSB journey.
Sixth formers enjoy excellent progression to courses and career paths of their choice, most pursuing a university course, but an increasing number are securing degree apprenticeships.
Most year eleven students progress into our sixth form, although a small number do leave us to pursue alternative or vocational courses that are offered in alternative environments. We also welcome a number of external students who wish to join our sixth form, and these come from a wide geographical area, as far afield as Chester and Liverpool. We value each of these students equally and are keen for all to quickly settle into our practices and meet our expectations.
We are developing our outreach programme to enable us to broaden our appeal to students from a larger catchment area and to those attending 11-16 schools who may not have previously considered continuing their education here.
We encourage any student considering applying to WGSB6 to contact schooloffice@wirralgrammarboys.com to arrange a bespoke tour of our facilities and a chance to meet students and teachers. We hope this personalised approach will provide a valuable and informative opportunity to learn more about our community.

A Levels are extremely challenging and national data shows that students who enter with six grade 6’s in points value would typically gain the order of grades of C,D,D at A Level. Bearing in mind that many universities expect grades of at least B,B,B, admitting students on to A Levels with low GCSE grades may not be in their best interest. We are a high performing sixth form and work hard to maintain an academic yet nurturing environment. Our entry criteria for sixth form are a minimum of 6 passes at Grade 6 or better. We also expect pupils to achieve a minimum of Grade 6 in English and Maths at GCSE, and preferably to attain at least Grade 7 in the subjects they wish to pursue at A-level. Consideration is also given to the degree of effort and commitment as reflected in progress grades during Year 11. Our prime concern is for students to embark on courses that are appropriate for their ability and that they will enjoy studying in depth for two years.
Any external applicants can access our application form here.
Following receipt of an application form, a conditional offer letter will be sent detailing how the place can be confirmed on results day; this will be sent in the spring term. Internal applicants are NOT required to complete an application form but will still receive a conditional offer letter as it is important that all students are fully aware of our entrance criteria. Places will be confirmed on results day and external applicants are invited to attend with evidence of their examination results once we have distributed results to our year eleven cohort.
If you are unable to attend on results day to confirm your results, please call the school on 0151 644 0908 and ask for a message to be passed on to the sixth form team. It is important that you make contact with the school as soon as possible on or after results day to allow us to discuss your conditional offer.
Our primary purpose is to help our students progress to the next step of their educational / employment journey, but being in the sixth form is also about assisting students’ personal development and to support them as they face the challenges of post-16 study.
Students will be set challenging academic targets and will be closely monitored, with appropriate pastoral support being offered for those who may need additional help and guidance, be that support with personal organisation, careers and progression advice or simply a listening ear. We are also proud of our extensive range of extra-curricular provision, enhanced further by our Wednesday afternoon enrichment programme, as well as the opportunities for student leadership that many of our sixth formers engage with. The sixth form experience is about all-round success and fulfilment, and we hope that anyone wishing to join our sixth form will wish to engage fully with all aspects of our busy and thriving sixth form community.
Please look through the Sixth Form area of our school website and read our Sixth Form Prospectus and Sixth Form Handbook for more information and guidance.
