Joining Wirral Grammar School for Boys

We understand that the transition to secondary school is a big step — and we want every pupil to feel confident, prepared, and excited about what lies ahead.

Our short video is designed to support Year 5 & 6 pupils and their families by providing a clear and reassuring overview of the 11+ grammar school entrance test at Wirral Grammar School for Boys.

You’ll find out:

  • What to expect on the day of the 11+ test
  • How we support pupils through the process
  • What makes life at Wirral Grammar School for Boys unique

The Admissions Process:

  • Complete and return the Assessment Request Form to Wirral Local Authority by 31st May. This applies to both Wirral and Cheshire residents.
  • Wirral LA will issue familiarisation information with details about the tests later in the Summer Term
  • The 11+ assessments take place in the third week of September. Wirral LA will notify parents about where the assessment is to be taken
  • Assessment results will be returned to parents by around 21st October
  • Preference forms for choice of secondary schools should be returned to your Local Authority by 31st October . Note: if you live in Cheshire then you complete the Cheshire preference form and send this the Cheshire LA. If you live in Wirral then you complete the Wirral LA form.

Free 11+ Resources

Wirral Grammar Schools are proud to be open to pupils from all backgrounds.

To encourage even greater representation of children at our schools, we work in partnership with Atom Learning, the leading online Key Stage 2 learning and 11+ preparation platform, to provide students who are eligible for Pupil Premium with free online learning and 11+ exam preparation.  This programme is designed to help children get familiar with the type of questions they may see on the 11+, and build exam technique and confidence. They’ll be able to access KS2 and 11+ practice questions, learning resources, and practice papers through their Atom Home account.

For non-pupil premium families, there is a five-day free trial available via the Atom website.

In Year Testing & Admissions

We understand that families may need to move schools during the academic year, and we’re here to help make that transition as smooth as possible. If you’re considering an in-year transfer to our school, we welcome your interest and are happy to guide you through the process.

We currently have spaces for this academic year (2025/2026) in the following Year Groups:

  • Year 7
  • Year 9
  • Year 10

How to Apply:

  1. Contact Us First – We recommend getting in touch with the school office to check current availability and discuss your child’s needs.
  2. Complete the Application – You’ll need to fill out the local authority’s in-year application form, which can be found on their website.
  3. Submit Supporting Documents – This may include proof of address and your child’s most recent school report.
  4. Sit the Test – Your child will need to be successful in completing the CAT 4 admissions test (see below).
  5. Await a Decision – Once your application is received, we aim to respond promptly. If a place is available, we’ll arrange a start date and a welcome meeting.

In order to assess a student’s academic abilities and likely academic potential, the school is supported by information gained from the CAT 4 tests. CAT4 comprises four sets of questions that assess the main types of mental processing that play a substantial role in human thought. All four series of questions are equally weighted in the outcomes. There are elements of the assessments that students who have taken the 11+ tests will be familiar with.

Please see this guide for further information regarding In Year Testing

After 1st March, the next steps are:

  • If your son took the test, achieved the standard for the Grammar School but you have been allocated another school, this will be because you made that school a higher preference OR because the school is full after the admission criteria have been applied.

If you have been offered a place at Wirral Grammar School for your son for September  we will contact you with details of arrangements for our Welcome Evening in the Summer Term.

The following publications are available for you to look through to help you to familiarise yourself with the school:
