Making the right choice for where you choose to study post-16 can be a real challenge; deciding on the most appropriate A-levels to pursue can also be difficult. At WGSB we are committed to offering as much support and guidance as possible to ensure that students make the right decisions and can begin their WGSB6 journey with confidence.
We hope that the majority of our Y11 will wish to stay with us for WGSB6. We also encourage applications from external students. For all students, details of our entrance criteria can be seen on our Sixth Form Admissions page.
Please remember to familiarize yourself with the content of both the WGSB6 Prospectus and the Handbook; this will assist you in deciding whether we are the right choice at post-16 and will also provide details of the courses offered at post-16.
For Y11 at WGSB, our programme of support begins in the spring term, although the launch pad for this programme will be Y11 mock examination results in December.
Significant Dates for current Y11 students:
Video and FAQs.
There will be no separate A level options meeting, but instead our subject leads will each prepare a video presentation which will be published online. There will also be an FAQ sheet of common questions.
Students are advised to watch these videos and study the FAQ sheets for any subjects they are considering studying at A level.
These resources will be posted asap towards the end of the autumn term.
THESE WILL BE AVILABLE THE WEEK OF 12TH DECEMBER
Additional video resources:
Here are some videos from netsixthform.com that you may also find helpful.
All subject leads be discussing A-level options in their Y11 lessons between now and the options deadline of 16th January 2023. These talks will be informal but a valuable opportunity for you to find out more about subjects you are considering studying at A-level.
You will notice from our WGSB6 Prospectus that we offer some A-level subjects that are not offered at GCSE. These include Politics, Law, Psychology and Economics.
The subject leads for these areas will be delivering a short introduction to their subject in an assembly on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.
We will also be holding a series of marketplace activities in the Chemistry labs over three lunchtimes week commencing Tuesday 10th January
Subject leads will set up a ‘stall’ and deliver some short presentations / Q&A sessions which Y11 students are encouraged to attend.
Students are advised to refer to all other sources of information regarding A-level options BEFORE attending the marketplace activity; this will ensure time is not wasted on asking questions that have been answered elsewhere and that maximum benefit can be gained from the marketplace events.
Day & time of marketplace:
Tuesday 10th January 12:50-1:30. Subjects: Mathematics / FM, English (Li & La), Spanish, French, DT, Law.
Wednesday 11th January 12:50-1:30. Subjects: Physics, Geography, PE, Psychology, Chemistry, Economics & Business
Thursday 12th January 12:50-1:30 . Subjects: Geology, Art & Design, Music, Biology, History, Politics, IT / Computing
Please note: subject allocation may change – this will be confirmed nearer the time.
We hope that by offering this programme of guidance, Y11 students will enjoy the opportunity to engage directly with subject leads and will be better equipped to make more informed and appropriate decisions.
WGSB6 pastoral colleagues will also be holding 1:1 meetings with students who may need more bespoke guidance on A-level and post-16 choices.
Please remember that any external applicants are welcome to apply for a bespoke tour of our WGSB6 facilities and a chance to meet members of our school and sixth form community. Please contact email@example.com to arrange this.
